Saying the Right Thing Right

Introduction

Think email. Think the Web. Think newsletters. Think speeches.

How often have you asked yourself: "Did I say it right?" With email in particular, saying it right is of paramount importance -- or so we are told.

Did You Say the Right Thing?

When was the last time you asked yourself, "Did I say the right thing?" Was the message or the point I wanted to make the right one?

Saying the wrong thing right is probably worse than saying the right thing wrong.

How do you know what the right thing to say is?

How many of the following questions will it answer affirmatively? (More is better!):

  • What will resonate with the listener or reader?

  • Will it answer a question on the reader's mind?

  • Will it get the reader nodding along with you?

  • Will it put the reader at ease?

  • Will it build on something already within the reader's comfort zone?

  • Is it structured to leave the reader with the essential "takeaway" you have in mind?
  • The Right Thing Isn't About You

Notice what questions were not on this list:

  • Did you say it the way you always said it?

  • Was it what you wanted the reader to know?

  • Did it show how smart you were?
  • How much of the time is communication about what we want to say, rather than about what the reader wants to hear or about what will work to explain yourself, your product or your service to the reader?

Unless you're saying the right thing, it doesn't really matter how well you're saying it.
