First Timers!
If you've been in the field of sales for longer than fifteen minutes, you no doubt know of the typical stereotypes that are involved with salespeople. They are aggressive, pushy and will do anything they have to do to close a sale. Those notions may or may not have been true in the past but it has been my experience that, in this day and age, those type of salespeople are becoming harder and harder to find. That is a good thing.
All of this brings me to a story that I would like to share with you today that just reinforced the beliefs that I discussed above. I have a friend with a young daughter who was in the market for a car and decided that she wanted to make this purchase on her own. (On a side note speaking as a Dad, those days when your kids want to step out on their own are filled with pride and fear all at the same time.) Anyway, she set out and began shopping for cars. She had her lists and all of the questions that she wanted to ask. She was certainly prepared.
She found the car she wanted and the salesperson, as she told it to me, was terrific about everything. Of course he knew his stuff and gave her all of the information she needed, but there was more to it than that. He recognized that she was buying her first car and rather than "take advantage", he did the opposite. He helped her in finding a car that she liked and a car that he knew she could afford and was dependable.
He went through everything from the test drive through delivery in a manner that put my friend's daughter at ease and made her car buying experience both productive and fun.
Sales as we know is about establishing a repeat customer base and getting referrals, is their a better way to do that than assisting those young consumers in having a positive first time experience? My friend's daughter now has bought the first of what will be many cars and my guess is it will not be the last one that she buys from that salesperson. Repeat and referrals, the two words that make all salespeople smile!
